I didn't want to read a book on civil rights where everyone is mean.
I didn't want to like this book either.
I was surprised by this book, I liked it right away and found myself not able to put it down. This book had strong characters that stayed true to their personalities even as circumstances changed.
I cared about the women in the book and missed them when I finished it. I want to have Minny and Aibileen as my friends.

A couple of my favorite lines:
"Law, that woman crazy," Kiki say. "I don't know how you always seem to get the crazy ones, Minny."
"Oh, like your Miss Patterson ain't?" Minny say to Kiki. "Shoot, she call the roll a the crazy lady club." page 13

"That's what I love about Aibileen, she can take the most complicated things in life and wrap them up so small and simple, they'll fit right in your pocket." page 313

I love this book. I like to read books like this to remind me to be kind to everyone, although it makes me sad to know how nasty people can be to each other. I loved the characters in this book and I felt like I went through all of their trials with them. I'm with Lauri, I would like to have Minny & Aibileen as my friends too.

Favorite Lines - (There were so many!)

"She already got the blue dress on I ironed this morning, the one with SIXTY-FIVE pleats on the waist, so tiny I got to squint through my glasses to iron. I don't hate much in life, but me and that dress is NOT on good terms." p.3

"'Oh Minny, I'm so excited.' I hear Miss Celia's dress swishing behind me. 'What do you think?' I turn around. 'Oh my Lord.' I might as well be Little Stevie Wonder I am so blinded by that dress. Hot pink and silver sequins glitter from her extra-large boobies all the way to her hot pink toes. 'Miss Celia,' I whisper. 'Tuck yourself in fore you lose something.'" p. 317

One more favorite line:

"Wasn't that the point of the book? For women to realize, We are just two people. Not that much separates us. Not nearly as much as I'd thought." p. 418

I LOVED this book! Lauri and Linda said it all. I want Aibileen and Minny for my friends. I'm so proud of Skeeter for being brave. Elizabeth Leefolt needs to get a backbone and a brain. I tend to shy away from books where mean nasty people are involved, but this one I have to say is one of my new favorites and one I would read again.

Lauri and Linda also put down some of my favorite lines of the book, so I won't repeat them, but here's one I couldn't stop laughing over:

The geezer's wife, Eleanor Causwell, an original founder of the League, frowns. "Bosoms," she announces, with a hand to her own, "are for bedrooms and breastfeeding. Not for occasions with dignity."
"Well, what do you want her to do, Eleanor? Leave them at home?" pg. 322

I guess I am such a slug! I forgot to post the book picture and I forgot to write my comment. Sorry guys!

I loved this book for so many reasons. I loved the characters because they were so real. I love books that I can totally relate to and are so life like. I feel like this book could be a day in my life! The thing that I admire most about Minny and Aibileen is that they are about as real as it gets. I think that people who don't say what they mean or mean what they say are lacking and do realize how rich life can be. You don't have to be mean or hateful to be honest. I have way to many quotes to post but I love the "bosoms" line a ton!
