Linda's pick for October

Five Flavors of Dumb
by
Antony John

The Challenge: Piper has one month to get the rock band Dumb a paying gig.
The Deal: If she does it, Piper will become the band's manager and get her share of the profits.
The Catch: How can Piper possibly manage one egomaniacal pretty boy, one talentless piece of eye candy, one crush, one silent rocker, and one angry girl? And how can she do it when she's deaf?
Piper can't hear Dumb's music, but with growing self-confidence, a budding romance, and a new understanding of the decision her family made to buy a cochlear implant for her deaf baby sister, she discovers her own inner rock star and what it truly means to be a flavor of Dumb.

I enjoyed this book. It was fast to read and definitely not a waste of time. It has been a long time since I have had to wipe tears away to be able to see the book. This book had me crying for both sadness and happiness. It made me think about what color my hair should be and I decided I like it the way it is.

Quotes: “They say it is about looking smart, or beautiful, or professional, but it’s not…they just want to walk out of here feeling like themselves again.”
“But I also like it when the best students finally catch on to the fact that they really are better than the poor students…when they realize they need to stop hiding out, hoping no one notice them.”

Can I just say that I love this book just as much, if not more, the second time through? It was like visiting with old friends and catching things I missed the first time.

Favorite Quotes:
"I took a time-out and thought cleansing thoughts." pg. 86

"Okay, that's three times you've thanked me, so we should stop now. I'm not used to it, and it's freaking me out. Besides, I'm supposed to be meeting my parole officer at four o' clock."
It was a good exit line. I just hoped I never had a chance to use it myself. pg. 207

"Don't worry about wanting to change; start worrying when you don't feel like changing anymore. And in the meantime, enjoy every version of yourself you ever meet, because not everybody who discovers their true identity likes what they find." pg. 234

"It was the smallest, gentlest, most earth-shattering kiss in the long and glorious history of kisses, and it took my breath away." pg. 288

I like this book for so many reasons. I truly believe that music can heal and I like how this theme is shown throughout the book. I also enjoy how Piper found herself and learned how to take control in so many different ways.

"I have to say, someone who breaks as many rules as Finn really ought to work on perfecting a look of innocence or defiance, or something. All he seems to have mastered is the deer-in-the-headlights look." pg 9

"Music. It's not about those things. It's about a feeling. It's about expressing yourself. It's about letting go." pg. 156

"Don't worry about wanting to change; start worrying when you don't feel like changing anymore." pg. 234
