Annell's Pick for June 10th Book Club

The Rent Collector

The Rent Collector
by Camron Wright

Synopsis:
Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not working.
Just when things seem worst, Sang Ly learns a secret about the ill-tempered rent collector who comes demanding money—a secret that sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past. The Rent Collector is a story of hope, of one woman's journey to save her son and another woman's chance at redemption. It demonstrates that even in a dump in Cambodia—perhaps especially in a dump in Cambodia—everyone deserves a second chance.

I really enjoyed this book, it made me appreciate my life. It also shows that we can never know what troubles people are dealing with in their lives, and what good things they are doing. Good pick, Annelle.

This book is right at the top of my FAVORITE books of ALL TIME and is one I will read again and again. It made me grateful for all I have and all the opportunities I have. It also gave me a greater love (if that's possible) for books and more awareness of what reading can do for a person.

Favorite Quote:
"Of all the stories I have read about heroes, and all that I could ever read, of one thing I'm now certain - he is mine."

"To this day, if we look carefully around Stung Meanchey, if we search for stories that teach truth and goodness, stories with lessons that can soften and change our hearts - we will discover hope."

This is one of my favorite books ever, too. I can't give any quotes, because I'd have to quote practically the whole book.
Two things:
First, when Simon goes to physical therapy, they scrape his knee and leg with a glass tool in what sounds a similar way she did to her son. Sometimes the old ways are the best!
Second, I had a college class where we had to take different versions of the same fairy tale, and compare and contrast them. They were sorted by a numbering/lettering system, though, of course, they are always discovering new ones. It was one of my favorite assignments ever. :)
