Linda's pick for January

WONDER
by
R.J. Palacio

August Pullman is a 10-year-old boy who likes Star Wars and Xbox, ordinary except for his jarring facial anomalies. Homeschooled all his life, August heads to public school for fifth grade and he is not the only one changed by the experience--something we learn about first-hand through the narratives of those who orbit his world. August’s internal dialogue and interactions with students and family ring true, and though remarkably courageous he comes across as a sweet, funny boy who wants the same things others want: friendship, understanding, and the freedom to be himself.

Happy Reading Friends!!!

Everyone should read a book at Christmas time that makes you cry. One that touches your heart and makes you want to be a better and kinder person. This book has given me both the tears and the commitment. Thanks, Linda, for picking this book. I never would have read it without having it be a book club pick, and I would of missed out.

"um...sometimes a duck is just a duck!" page 288

"Shall we make a new rule of life...always to try to be a little kinder than is necessary?" J.M. Barrie page 298

I love this book. To me it is a life changer. It really makes me think about how I treat others and it makes me want to be a kinder person. It took me a while to decide to read it when it first came out a couple of years ago. But I am so glad I did.

"I wish every day could be Halloween. We could all wear masks all the time. Then we could walk around and get to know each other before we got to see what we looked like under the masks." pg. 73

"I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives." pg. 231

This is one of my favorite books...one that I make my kiddos read when they get to 5th grade. It definitely helps you want to be a better and more kind person.

"Maybe it is a lottery, but the universe makes it all even out in the end. The universe takes care of all its birds." pg. 204

"Funny how sometimes you worry a lot about something and it turns out to be nothing." pg. 215

"What a marvelous line, isn't it? Kinder than is necessary. Because it is not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed. Why i love that line, that concept, is that it reminds me that we carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of kindness." pg. 300

I really loved this book! I loved how wonderfully kind and sweet his family was. I just shows you how looks are not important it's what's inside is what really counts! So sorry I had to be out of town for this meeting. Wish I could have been in on the discussion.

Great pick!
